CHROMOSOME STUDIES ON VASCULAR FLORA OF THE RUSSIAN FAR EAST

Probatova Nina S., Rudyka Elvira G. & Shatalova Svenlana A., Institute of Biology & Soil Sciences, Vladivostok, Russia

Chromosome studies on the Russian Far East (RFE) flora, initiated by A.P. Sokolovskaya in 1959 on Sakhalin, are continued by the authors, especially in the south of RFE. First data were obtained for endemics of the Amur River basin, for spp. of uncertain taxonomic position (Symphyllocarpus exilis, Potentilla amurensis, Draba grandis, etc.), for those listed or to be listed among rare and endangered. Chromosome numbers (CN) data bank is compiled for the Amur River basin (Russian part), the Sea of Japan basin (in the limits of the Primorsky Territory - PT), Sakhalin and the Kurile Islands. CN are obtained on PT in 1160 spp., ca. 50% of the total amount of its flora. The largest taxa of RFE were caryotaxonomically analyzed. CN in some biogeographical and ecological groups in RFE and ploidity of spp. in connection with antropotolerancy and flora conservation are under discussion.
