Direct regeneration of multiple shoots was obtained from seedling explants of Pterocarpus marsupium, a multipurpose tree. The morphogenetic potentiality of mesocotyl, nodal and shoot tip explants varied with the type of media employed. About 95% of mesocotyls formed 8-10 shoot buds within 15 days after placement on B5 medium fortified with 2 mg/1 BAP. Higher concentration of BAP and KN decreased shoot bud regneration. Hormonal synergism (BAP and KN with NAA) is also not effective for high frequency multiple shoot induction. Various other factors like carbon source, coconut milk and polarity were studied. Upon excision and transfer to rooting medium, the regenerated shoots developed into normal rooted plantlets.
