XVI International Botanical Congess
From 1995-98, the British Bryological Society (BBS) Tropical Bryology Group (TBG) have been making annual trips to Uganda funded by the UK Government's Darwin Initiative, looking at thebryophytes of montane forest. This has involved detailed inventories of Bwindi-Impenetrable Forest and forest on Mount Elgon, and less detailed surveys of most of the other primary forest areas. Identification of the thousands of collections is expected to be complete at least to family level by the end of next year and an attempt is also being made to identify as many as possible of the several thousand unidentified Uganda collections held in UK herbaria. In combination, these will source a book: 'Mosses and Liverworts of Uganda', to be completed towards the end of 2002.
