AN AMENDED INFRAGENERIC CLASSIFICATION OF THE WEST AFRICAN SPECIES OF IPOMOEA L. (CONVOLVULACEAE).

K.O. Ogunwenmo, Dept. of Marine, Biology and Fisheries, University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria.

Previous intrageneric treatments (Choisy, Mem. Soc. Phys. Geneve (1834), Griseb. Fl. Br. W. Ind. Is. (1864), Hall. F., bot. Jahrb. (1893), Bak. & Rendle, F.T.A. (1905), Verdc., F.T.E.A. (1963) etc.) Were revised. Based on overall similarities of observable morphological characters from field and herbarium studies, the following classification was proposed for species in our area: subg. Dasychaetia Hall. F., Orthipomoea Choisy, Ipomoea emend., Batatas (Choisy) Griseb. Emend., Quamoclit (Moench) Hall. F. emend., Erpipomoea Choisy emend. The justification for species allocation and section realignment in four of the six subgenera will be discussed.
