PRELIMINARY STUDIES FOR SUSTAINABLE USE OF Carludovica palmata R. & P. FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HANDCRAFT PAPER IN CABO CORRIENTES CHOCO, COLUMBIA.

Key words: Carludovica palmata, iraca, phenology, sustainability, Chocó. Carludovica palmata (Cyclanthaceae) grows in clearing and previously land in Chocó, Colombia. Its population density, distribution patterns, foliar turn over, phenology and bimonthly growth was studied from March 1997 to February 1998. The population density was found to be 1132 individual per hectare and the distribution patterns was spatial clusters. From the statistical analysis it was found that a sustainable use of the plant implies that leaves cuttings should done by half the total number of leaves present in each individual and at one year intervals each C. palmata shown a reproductive annual peak after dry season from December to March. The foliar yield has an average of 5.78 fruiting/year/plant.1M. Muñoz y, 2D.de J. Tuberquia
