Curcuma aromatica - AN INTACT NATURAL RESOURCE OF ASSAM.

G. Moral and J. Suhrawardy (Regional Agricultural Research Station, Assam Agricultural University, Kokrajhar, Gossaigaon - 783360, Assam, India).

An experiment was carried out on a wild species of plant (Curcuma aromatica) grown locally and extensively surrounding the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Gossaigaon, Assam to monitor the food and medicinal value of the species. The powder form of this species was extracted from the fresh rhizome through a standard analytical method. Results of the chemical analysis revealed that the product is rich in carbohydrate (73.92 gm/100 gm), fat (1.26 gm/100 gm), protein (0.31 gm/100 gm), calcium (230.4 mg/100 gm), phosphorus (141.95 mg/100 gm), iron (12.58 mg/100 gm) and also vitamin C (3.2 mg/100 gm). Its high calorific value (303.52 K. cal/100 gm of powder), indicates that the product is a energy rich food material and comparable as well as compatible with food materials at present available as baby food. In addition, this food product could suitably be used as medicines for curing diarrhoea without any side effect. The study therefore, suggested to use this product as baby food, which is not only palatable but also economically viable.
