V.I. Melnik, Dept. of Natural Flora, Central Botanical Garden, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Kiev 252014, Ukraine

Systematic, phytogeographical and paleobotanical date show that Daphne sophia (endemic of Middle Russian Upland), D. taurica (Crimean endemic), D. caucasica (Caucasian endemic) and D. altaica (endemic of Altai Mountain) are separate, but very close races. Before glaciating it was syngameon of Daphne series Daphnanthes with large area from Middle Russian Upland to Altai Mountain. Modern species of this series is a relict of tertiary period. The ecological amplitude of these Daphne is very narrow in ecotone between forest, steppe and cretaceous vegetation. The felling, forest planting, mine working on the slopes are dangerous for existence of the habitats and populations. The recommendation on protection of these species are suggested.
