The study of the Compositae fruits has shown that according to the degree of embryo defense 2 carpological groups are singled out in the family. I Cynara (Cardueae): powerful palisade layer is developed in the spermoderm. 2 Lactuca (all other tribes by Takhtajan)Cspecialization of the pericarp are characteristic of it. The study of Adenocaulon species achenes has revealed the similar structure with Inuleae: longitudinal-and-rib-bed achenes, covered with glutinous glands in the upper part, mesocarp mechanical complexes are arranged in numerous columns along the periphery, the exocarp is composed of I row of crystalbearing cells. However, the presence of palisade schlerenchyma cells in the spermoderm, large weakly-ribbed achenes draw it nearer to Cardueae and characterize genus Adenocaulon as a transitional type.
