Abstract Number: 4823
Session = Although mushrooms belonging to the general Agaricus and Pleurotus are cultivated worldwide, few attempts have been made for recovery and preservation of wild germplasm from tropical America. In this region, the CP=s culture collection, established in 1989, has started a programme for germplasm preservation and genetic improvement of wild Agaricus and Pleurotus species. Native strains are isolated from tropical and subtropical regions in Mexico, and maintained using conventional methods. These strains are being studied using genetic techniques, in order to understand their pattern of sexuality and to confirm their wild origin. Fruiting trials are carried out in order to assess fertility of heterokaryons and homokaryons, and to obtain viable progeny. Breeding efforts are concentrated on developing strains which show genetic resistance to Trichoderma attack, as well as tolerance to high fruiting temperatures. A hybrid strain of P. ostreatus (CP-50) has been successfully cultivated under tropical conditions. Wild Agaricus strains studied have been cultivated and produced with virtually the same compost, methods, and facilities used for the commercial cultivation of A. bisporus..
