ROLE OF INTRA- AND INTERSPECIFIC VARIABILITY IN AGROPYRON GAERTN

L. L. Malyshev, Institute of Plant Industry, St. Petersburg, Russia

Twenty populations of crested wheatgrass were used for the study of intra- and interpopulational variability of morphometrical characters. In order to compare their levels, we used method described by J. Maze (1983). This method permits to cover variation of the complex of characters as a whole. The portion of intrapopulational variability is low for all complexes of characters (morphology of stem, morphology and fertility of spike) - less then 30%. Agropyron is genera with ecologically homogeneous areal, cross-pollinated species have the lower level of ecological differentiation then self-pollinated ones. Intrapopulational variation is significantly higher in the complex of characters of spike morphology and fertility (geographical differentiation of populations) then in the complex of stem morphology (the direct response on the environmental conditions).L.
