THE GENUS MACHAERIUM BENTHAM IN ECUADOR

P.E. Lozano (Herbario LOJA, Universidad Nacional de Loja, Loja-Ecuador)

In Papillionoideae-Dalbergie the genus Machaerium comprises around 125-130 species (Rudd, 1972). Machaerium was established by Persoon (1807). Bentham (1862) assigned 43 species to this genus. After that Hahn (1941) published a revision with a total of 121 species (no include Ecuador). Macbride (1943) published 19 species from Peru, and recently Rudd (1977) has published a monograph on the genus Machaerium from Mexico. Until now 13 species are founded in Ecuador, in a wide altitudinal distribution ranging from 0 to 800 m in the western part of the country, and 0 to 1700 m in the eastern part. Some species like (M isadelphum) cross the Andes and occurs both at the pacific coast and in the amazon. Species of Machaerium show plasticity in their growth system, occurring as a liana o tree in one single species, there is some morphological confusion with Dalbergia, but Machaerium differs from this one by having dehiscent anthers and fruits with a basal seed and terminal wing. For my study, I have carried out research on the taxonomy and morfometric parameters including phytogeography and adaptation to environmental characteristics. Results are not completely ready yet.
