The concept of the ecological and coenological species group can be used not only in the vegetation science investigations, but for germplasm purposes also. In order to extend the genetical and ecological basis of the forage grass native collection in the Carpathian Area (Central Europe) we applied the system of the coeno-ecological indicator groups (cca 70). The indicator species group as structural and functional unit of plant community it was used to identify valuable adaptive populations (ecotypes, geneoecodems) and broadening the forage plant genetic resources. The role of coeno-ecological groups in identification of genetic resources and collection of samples have been demonstrated concerned with: ecotypic differentiation, forage quality, cytological distinctiveness, germplasm mapping for the following species: Festuca arundinacea, F. pratensis, Lolium perenne, Dactylis glomerata.
