Gene flow among subpopulations of Rhododendron metternichii var. hondoense was directly measured by analyzing parentage of seedlings using highly polymorphic microsatellite genetic markers. Sizes, coordinates and number of inflorescences of all flowering trees were investigated in 250 m x 100 m quadrat. Seeds were sampled from some individuals to determine their pollen donors. Although the number of adults contributing to one fruit were highly limited, pollen donors were different from fruit to fruit. Phenological differences seem to be the major factor determining these gene flow patterns.X
