Formulation of cosmetics using completely natural raw materials is a formidable and challenging task. The present paper deals with the formulation of a natural shampoo based on plants used traditionally for hair care. The formulation consists of saponins extracted from Sapindus mukorossi, alkyl polyglycoside-a plant based surfactant and natural additives. The performance characteristics of this product were evaluated and compared with the market shampoos containing natural products. The parameters evaluated include foaming, detergency, wetting, surface tension, Ph, viscosity, protein loss measurements, conditioning effects and skin and eye irritation tests.
