Recently, we studied formation of lignin like polymer produced by UV irradiation of coniferyl alcohol (CA) (1). In this study, we compare structure of a polymer synthetized by UV irradiation of CA with a polymer obtained by enzymic polymerization of the same monomer. Subsequent irradiation by UV light caused structural changes in both polymers which are observed by GPC mass distribution, UV, vibrational and NMR measurments. The results are interpreted in terms of bond breaking and new arrangement of structural modules. Ecological consequences are discussed.
