PHYLOGENETIC INFERENCE OF THE GENUS PANELLUS AND RELATED SPECIES BASED ON LSU OF rDNA.

Jiankang Jin, Karen W. Hughes & Ronald H. Petersen, Dept of Botany, Univ. of Tenn., Knoxville

Partial LSU of rDNA has been sequenced for representative isolates of 7 species: Panellus stypticus, P. mitis, P. ringens, P. serotinus, Dictyopanus pusillus, Tectella patellaris and Pleurotopsis longinqua. P. stypticus and D. pusillus share very similar Group I Intron with a length of ~400 bp inserted in the same position of LSU. With yeast sequence as outgroup, a neighbor-joining tree was constructed with three clades: P. stypticus joins with D. pusillus as a clade, P. ringens joins P. longinqua as a close clade, P. mitis, P. serotinus and T. patellaris form a loose clade. Group I intron is detected in those species. The results support Burdsall et al.=s merging of Dictyopanus into Panellus, but question Horak's splitting of P. longinqua. Classification of this complex is discussed. J
