The genus Hyaloraphidium Pascher et Korshikov was considered so far to represent a group of heterotrophic green algae. On the basis of its morphology and its mode of reproduction by autospores, Hyaloraphidium was assigned to the family Ankistrodesmaceae/Selenastraceae (Chlorophyceae). 18S rRNA analyses show that H. curvatum SAG 235-1, which is the only strain available from a culture collection, belongs to the fungi. However, molecular and ultrastructural data as well as the chemical composition of the cell wall do not unequivocally support a taxonomical assignment on the class level. Therefore, H. curvatum might represent a new class of fungi.
