The research is done in cooperation with the Forest Department of Hunan Province and its Forest Botanical Garden. The research belongs to the project AThe biodiversity of tropical Southeast Asian bryoflora.@ A checklist of Hunan bryophytes was prepared and 269 bryophyte taxa accepted. This number is much too low, for during our two expeditions to Hunan in 1997 and 1998 more than 60 genera not previously known from Hunan were found. Additional material for research will be collected in Hunan in several conserved areas, which lie within the subtropical evergreen forest zone extending from Japan to the Himalayas. Our study will reveal the biological diversity of the bryoflora, which prevailed within this zone before the exploitation of its forests.
