THE RED LIST PROGRAM AND CENTERS OF PLANT DIVERSITY: SYNERGIES FOR FUTURE CONSERVATION ACTION

Information on threatened species has proved to be very useful in broad conservation planning in the Succulent Karoo, a major global center of plant diversity in southern Africa. The data were used to select and prioritise broad areas for potential new protected areas. This paper investigates how threatened plants data from the IUCN/SSC Red List Programme can be combined with data from the Centres of Plant Diversity (CPD) project to provide a useful conservation planning tool. As a first approach, we estimate draft lists of threatened plants can be generated from the threatened plants database maintained by WCMC for sixty of the 234 CPD sites. These are largely island states or islands, mountains or sites in countries for which good data are available. Mechanisms to improve the links between these projects are proposed to ensure the development of an effective global plant conservation program.
