XYLARIACEAE IN TREE-INHABITING FUNGAL COMMUNITIES IN UKRAINE

V. P. Hayova, Dept. of Mycology, Kholodny Institute of Botany, Kiev, 252601, Ukraine

At present, 29 species of 8 genera of bark- and wood-inhabiting Xylariaceae are known from Ukraine. The most representative are Hypoxylon, Xylaria and Rosellinia (9, 8 and 7 species, respectively). Some xylariaceous fungi are highly host-specific, for example, Hypoxylon and Biscogniauxia species, associated with beech. Tree-inhabiting fungal communities in various beech forests in Ukraine are dominated by different xylariaceous species. Hypoxylon fragiforme and Biscogniauxia nummularia appeared to be the most common xylariaceous fungi on beech in Ukraine. The former predominates in the Carpathians and up at the eastern limit of European beech range, whereas the latter is more common on Oriental beech in Crimea.
