PHLOROGLUCINOL AS A NATURAL PHENOLIC CONSTITUENT OF HUMULUS LUPULUS

Charles T. Hammond and Paul G. Mahlberg, Department of Biology, Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, and Department of Biology, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana

Phloroglucinol, a free phenol of rare occurrence in angiosperms, is an abundant and characteristic natural component of shoot laticifer exudate of beer hops, Humulus lupulus. Phloroglucinol (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene) was isolated by preparative thin layer chromatography and identified from 1H NMR spectrometry and comparison with authentic standard. Phloroglucinol, or its derivatives, may be important in the biosynthetic pathway leading to the production of the closely related specialized secondary products of commercial beer hops, humulone and lupulone.
