RECENT TRENDS IN MEDICINAL PLANT RESEARCH IN NIGERIA

As the current National President of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy, the author describes in the paper the areas of research of his members in medicinal plant research. These include (a) Studies of the antidiarrheal potentials of some compositae plants (Ageratum conyzoides, Chromolaena odoratun, etc.), (b) Oral hyploglycaemic activity of the extract of the fruit of Carica papaya, (c) Toxicity studies on some medicinal plants in use as antimalarials (Azadirachtca indica, Morinda lucida, Enantia chlorantha, etc.) In addition to above, he also includes some data collected during his ethnobotanical survey trips. The plants included those employed in diseases of the cardiovascular system (Arterial hypertension, Hemorrhoids) Digestive system (abdominal pains, dysentery/diarrhoea, constipation, toothache, vomiting, Ear, Nose and Throat (earache, tonsilitis), Female Genital system, Obstetrical and Gynecological (Breast abscess, disturbances of menstruation), Infertility, etc. Scientists are thus encouraged to investigate the plant recipes.
