XVI International Botanical Congess
The tropical rain forests which occupy the western ghats of peninsular India forms the treasure of vegetation of the Indian forest ecosystem with rich bio-diversity. It is because of man=s greed and natural calamities, several plant species are in danger and likely to become extinct. Hence the responsibility of conservation and multiplication of rare, endangered, threatened and endemic plants of western ghtas, South India is taken up as a great challenging task by the Botanical Garden of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Survey, identification and collection of seeds, seedlings and cuttings of Rauvolfia serpentina, Pterocarpus santalinus, Garcinia indica, G. morella, Kingiodendron pinnatum, Xylia xylocarpa, Strobilanthes sps., Canes and Palms have been started. Seed germination studies, induction of rooting in stem cuttings, tissue culture techniques and planting of well established seedlings have been also been carried out in botanical garden.
