The wood anatomy of 34 species of the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve (22? 30' and 22? 33'S, 42? 15' and 42? 19'W) was presented. The species selected were those with the highest importance values (IVs) and /or those that show promise in reforestation of degraded areas. The climate at the Reserve is hot and humid, mean annual temperature of 18.6? C, mean annual rainfall of 2260 mm. Terminology and methods used followed the basic norms of the IAWA Committee (1989). The majority of the species showed less than 10 vessels/mm2 , vessel length higher than 500 ?m and vessel tangential diameter higher than 100 ?m, simple perforation plates, intervessel pits alternate, libriform fibres and axial parenchyma predominantly paratracheal, indication a predomination of mesophorfic characteristics, as expected for species of the lowland Atlantic rainforest.
