INFRAGENERIC CLASSIFICATION OF PASSIFLORA

A study of the literature revealed that there are generic and infrageneric names described to include species currently placed in Passiflora. We have found over 90 infrageneric names, many previously overlooked. To prevent disturbance in the nomenclature in use, a careful program of lectotypification of many of those names is being completed. Some well-known names must change rank to be kept in use. The last revision of Passiflora included 22 subgenera, and a few more have been published subsequently. Considering the strong affinities that link some of them, we propose to group the species in only 4 subgenera.
