pL-samples of solutes and exudates from the surface of the roots of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L) and solutes from the epidermal cell layer are collected using micro-capillaries and analysed using capillary electrophoresis. Qualitative and quantitative accounts of the constituents of the root exudates and the epidermal layer cells are recorded from roots of plants following generation of a range of leaf [NO-3]. Variations in root morphology in response to different treatments are noted.
