COASTAL VEGETATION INDICATORS FOR CONSERVATION

Ileana Espejel & Brenda Ahumada, Baja California University, México

There are several environmental indicators for monitoring nature quality. We have chosen vegetation indicators and tested them on a heterogeneous landscape in Baja California. Nine land-use units were assessed: from urban to pristine vegetation. Seven compositional indicators were effective, especially one evaluating the ratio of exotic plant presence versus the native element. Structural indicators showed coastal scrub transformation to grasslands and natural dynamics after fires. Functional indicators (physiological and reproductive strategies, plant interactions, keystone species and disturbance tolerance) were useful for designing future scenarios and selecting sites for restoration and protection. These indicators are practical tools for local decision-makers and regional planners interested in the conservation and management of coastal vegetation.
