EXPLOITATION, USES AND CONSERVATION OF FREQUENTLY-USED MEDICINAL PLANTS BY THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF OYO STATE, NIGERIA

A. Egunyomi, Dept. of Botany & Microbiology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria

An ethnobotanical survey on the exploitation uses and conservation of medicinal plants frequently used by the indigenous people of Oyo State, Nigeria was carried out. Owing to the increasing cost of allopathic drugs more and more people continue to depend on phytomedicines sourced from the wild. Of all the methods of indiscriminate exploitation of plants, destructive bark harvesting poses the greatest danger to the species. The uses of the plants in the treatment of various health problems are given. The negative perception of the indigenous people to conservation shows that there is the need for aggressive enlightenment programs to arrest the worsening situation. Conservation methods based on the cultural practices of the people are suggested.
