A REVISION AND CRITICAL CHARACTER ASSESSMENT OF THE EASTERN AUSTRALIAN SPECIES OF PULTENAEA

R.P.J. de Kok & J.G. West, CSIRO Plant Industry, Canberra A.C.T., Australia

The genus Pultenaea is the largest genus within the Australian endemic tribe Mirbelieae (Fab.). The approx. 120 species form a conspicuous element of the understorey in a wide variety of habitats, particularly in the south-west and -east. The aim of the project is to resolving the taxonomic problems at species level and develop a sound phylogeny for the whole genus. Most of the characters which are used traditionally for species and intra-genera delimitation in this group are very variable. Critical assessment of these traditional and any new (leaf-, hair- and ovary-anatomy) characters using among others Electron- and Light-Microscopy, is therefore an essential part of this work. The major outcomes will be a revision of all species from eastern Australia. In collaboration with T. Macfarlane of Perth, the relationships between the species will be examined and possible new (intra) generic delimitations be proposed. As part of the revision, an interactive key to Pultenaea will be made, which will be part of a cooperative multi-authored key to all species of the Mirbelieae.
