FLORISTIC DIVERSITY OF THE PICO DO JABRE, SERRA DE TEIXEIRA, PARAÍBA, BRAZIL

The Pico do Jabre is an isolated mountain peak, at an elevation of 1,197 m, the highest area found in the settentrional northeastern region of Brazil. It is located in the municipality of Maturéia, Serra de Teixeira, in the south-central region of the State of Paraíba, Brazil, 7°15'12 lat. S e 37° 23'07 long. W. Its vegetation is known as mata serrana" and is characterized by the presence of floristic elements belonging mainly to semidecidous and humid forest and semi-arid called caatinga". This work constitutes the first botanical survey in this area and will contribute towards the preparation of the Flora of Paraíba". Collecting for this project began in 1991 and has continued on a more intensive monthly basis from January 1997 to July 1998. The herbarium collections from the Pico do Jabre entered into the TROPICOS data base include 1,800 numbers of vascular plants, from 67 families and 263 species. The most common families are Leguminosae, sens. lat (with 33 species), Euphorbiaceae (19), Asteraceae (17), Solanaceae (13), Bignoniaceae (11), Sapindaceae (10) and Rubiaceae (10). In this work a check-list of the species found in Pico do Jabre is presented.
