STUDY ON THE BIODIVERSITY OF KOONTHANGGULAM BIRD SANCTUARY IN TAMILNADU IN INDIA

Recently Koonthankulam in Tirunelveli District in Tamilnadu in India has been declared as a bird sanctuary by the Department of Forest. It is an important wetland for aquatic and semi-aquatic birds for feeding and breeding. This area is one of the rich biodiversity centres in Tirunelveli District in Tamilnadu. Considering its importance a preliminary study on the biodiversity of this area has been undertaken. Herbs, shrubs, creepers, climbers, tree species, grasses, cultivated species, plants of agricultural importance, Bird species, fish species, phytoplanktons, Zooplanktons and other water organisms were studied. The problems in conservation and suggestions are discussed.
