YOUTH INVESTIGATORS AND CHANGE AGENTS: ECOLOGICALSTUDIES AND RESTORATION

Larry E. DeBuhr, Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Ecological studies and restoration projects provide excellent opportunities to engage students in active investigations of ecological systems. Children who collect and analyze data, solve problems, and apply solutions to real world problems learn science more easily and more completely than children who simply read about science or hear a lecture on science. This presentation will describe several types of education programs at the Missouri Botanical Garden that operate at the Shaw Arboretum, the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center, and several other community sites. The presentation will also describe the approaches used with these programs and will demonstrate through slides the nature of the restoration work that the children do.
