A LABORATORY MANUAL FOR THE LIGHT MICROSCOPICAL IDENTIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF GROUND HERBAL PRODUCTS

Stanley M. Cichowicz and George C. Ziobro, U.S. FDA, Washington, D.C.

During the Golden Age of Light Microscopy" an extensive effort was made to generate publications containing detailed hand drawings and descriptions of the diagnostic characters of ground botanicals. This era started in Europe in the late 1800s and ended with the publication in 1939 of the Andrew L. Winton's four volume set on The Structure and Composition of Foods. These references are a natural starting point of a ground botanical microscopic analysis, unfortunately, they are rare and limited in scope. Many people have expressed a need for additional literature in this area and the authors have set up an electronic system for producing and distributing this type of information. This manual is presented as a demonstration of this digital imaging technology. The CD-ROM manual is designed to be read by readily available Internet browsers.
