INCREASING VEHICULAR TRAFFIC IN TIRUCHIRAPALLI MUNICIPAL CITY EXACERBATING AIR POLLUTION-A CASE STUDY

Unchecked vehicular proliferation justified as development has resulted in the deterioration of the city's environment with excessive emission of carbon and other greenhouse gases. Thousands of vehicles, big and small, on the roads of Tiruchirapalli outwits the development of roads, causing irreparable damage to atmosphere and human beings in particular. A simple enumeration of all the motor vehicles moving on the roads of Tiruchirapalli, the first of its kind for the city, manifests the extent of air pollution. The results are tabulated, analyzed and discussed. Remedial measures are suggested in this paper to save the atmosphere from further calamity.
