Roxana Cardoso Barreto, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil

This work reports a survey of Brazilian Commelinaceae R.Br. species. The study was based on a comparative morphological analysis of specimens obtained from herbaria and cultivated materials. Identification keys were made to genera and species levels. Descriptions and comments related to taxonomy, morphology, phenology and geographical distribution are included, as well as plates of flowering branches and floral morphology. Sixty-one species were identified, representing 13 genera: Aneilema R.Br., Buforrestia C.B. Clarke, Callisia Loefl., Commelina L., Dichorisandra J.C. Mikan, Floscopa Lour., Geogenanthus Ule, Gibasis Raf., Murdannia Royle, Siderasis Raf., Tinantia Scheidw., Tradescantia L. and Tripogandra Raf. The genus Dichorisandra (23 spp.) showed the greatest number of species occurring in Brazil, followed by Tradescantia and Commelina, each with 8 species.
