GUT FUNGI OF ISOPODS, THE GENUS PALAVASCIA

M.J. Cafaro, Dept. Ecol.& Evol.Biol., U. of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66045

Many biologists have studied Trichomycetes in larval aquatic insects, those that inhabit crustaceans have been understudied. Of particular interest are the fungal species that invade isopods. Indeed, in the order Asellariales, Asellaria is found strictly in isopods. Eccrinales have some species found only in isopods. These species represent the three families of the order: the genera Alacrinella and Eccrinoides in the Eccrinaceae, Parataeniella in the Parataeniellaceae and Palavascia in the Palavasciaceae. Palavascia was described by Tuzet & Manier in 1947. The genus has two previously described species, P. philosciae and P. sphaeromae. The first one is known only from one site in France, while P. sphaeromae has a worldwide distribution. A third species is described here and the species of Palavascia are compared, with comments on their known distributions.
