FUNGI ASSOCIATED WITH ARCTOSTAPHYLOS IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

J.R. Blair, Biology Department, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway, San Francisco CA 94132 USA

Very little is known about the fungi that occur with the more than 50 species in the ericaceous genus Arctostaphylos. The majority of information comes from studies of its mycorrhizal relationships. Collections of all fleshy basidiomycetes and ascomycetes found in selected stands of Arctostaphylos were made beginning January 1996 and ending in the spring of 1998. All identifiable carpophores were collected, including basidiomycetes and ascomycetes. The majority of sampling was done on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, with limited sampling conducted in appropriate stands throughout central California. Approximately 130 species of fungi have been found associated with 11 taxa of Arctostaphylos. Taxonomic associations and cological trends will be discussed, and similarity comparisons between sites will be presented.
