Fuel-wood scarcity is a unique problem in developing countries. A case study of selection of promising tree species for wood fuel production and rehabilitation of sodic wastelands is presented as a model. Field trials of 55 hardwood species were laid in sample plot trials and of another 15 taxa in replicated species x site interaction trials. Establishment, biomass production and fuel quality were evaluat ts and habitat.
