WILD ALMONDS OF ARMENIA

Armenia is one of the eight genetically centers of the world. In Armenia have been registered two species of wild almond: Amygdalus nairica and Amygdalus fenzliana. They are characterized with big variety of inspecies polymorphism. It was find more than 10 independent forms and population of wild almond. They contain big variety in sizes of seeds, shape of leaves, length of graft, appearance of glands and spins. Seeds have big variety of morphological characteristics. The endocarp of seeds has five different drawing like spots, furrows, sleek etc. Current research is aimed to undertake detailed kariological analysis of wild almonds. Wild almonds of Armenia are growing in mountainous and stony areas, ranging in altitude from 400-1700m above sea level, in neighborhood with semidesert, dry steep, friganoid vegetation.
