FEDERAL INFORMATION SYSTEM GENETIC RESOURCES (BIG)

Konrad Bachmann, Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung (IPK), Gatersleben, Germany

Four German institutions (besides the IPK there are: German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), Department for Special Botany of the Ruhr University Bochum, Information Centre for Genetic Resources (IGR) of ZADI.) Will combine their databases on wild and cultivated plants to establish BIG 9Bundes-Informationssystem Genetische Ressourcen) as an online information system on the Internet. The BIG project aims at developing an integrated information system on plant genetic resources that covers a wide range of taxonomic, genetic, biological, ecological, economic and geographical information. It will permit complex searches in heterogeneous, decentralized databases. The concept of BIG is generally applicable to taxon-related information. The methodology and tools to be developed for BIG can thus be easily transferred to other organisms. In this way, BIG will provide a model online system for genetic resources. BIG is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF).
