LITTERFALL IN A FOREST WITH Araucaria angustifolia IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL

The present work was carried out in São Francisco de Paula National Forest, locate din the municipality of São Francisco de Paula, RS, Brazil. The litter fall was evaluated by monthly collections in three sampling areas, two of which with Auraucaria angustifolia native forest and one of Araucaria angustifolia cultivated forest with native underbushs. The average output in the native areas was of 5 857.60 tons/hectares/year, and in the cultivated forest was of 6 370.19 tons/hectares/year. In the nature forest areas, the average araucaria contribution was of 62.25%, the latifoliate contribution was of 30.45%, and for the other material, 6.69%. In the cultivated forest the araucaria contribution was of 67.00%, the latifoliate contribution was of 26.46% and the other material was of 6.54%. The native forest presented, in average 18 687.7 tons of litter accumulated per hectare and the cultivated forest presented 14 870.30 tons/hectare. The average ash content of the total litter is 6.24%. The decomposition coefficients are: for the native forest areas 0.99, and for the cultivated forest, 0.89.
