Wood anatomical characteristics of semideciduous tree species, from São Paulo State, southeast part of Brazil, were carried out to investigate the tree ring structure and growth periodicity. The wood samples were analyzed for the occurrence of growth rings and dendrometer bands were fixed in the trunk of the species. Some species showed visible growth zones distinguished by wood anatomical features, like semi ring porous, boundaries of parenchyma bands, early and latewood with thin and thick-walled fiber cells, gum ducts, etc. The dendrometer measurements are showing a growth periodicity of trees related with the rainfall and phenology. These results constitute a potential tool for growth rate determination and tropical dendrochronological studies.
