ETHNOBOTANY AND THE USE OF FOREST PRODUCTS BY THE ANTANOSY PEOPLE, SOUTHEASTEN MADAGASCAR

Linda Lyon, Natural Resource Sciences, Washington State University, Pullman, WA 99163

Madagascar is simultaneously famous for its biodiversity and increasing rate of deforestation. This research investigates the forest product needs of the Antanosy people from southeastern Madagascar. These indigenous people depend on the forest to meet their daily needs of food, medicine, and shelter. This research reviews the use of plants for medicinal purposes including plant harvesting, preparation, and use. Finally, conservation strategies of the local people are identified to establish what is done on a traditional level to conserve natural resources.
