THE IUCN-SSC PLANTS PROGRAMME: CONSERVING THE CENTRES OF PLANT DIVERSITY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

J. Smart* and D. Bramwell+ (*Plantlife- the Wild-Plant Conservation Charity, 21 Elizabeth St, London, and +Jardin Canario, Las Palmas, Canary Islands)

The focus of the IUCN-SSC Plants Programme is the world's Centres of Plant Diversity. This project identified sites of global significance for the conservation of plant species, compiled in response to the urgent need to highlight areas of prime botanical importance. SSC aims to become the guardian of the Centres of Plant Diversity. To meet this vast challenge, SSC will develop information systems and red-listing programmes, and form strategic alliances with other conservation organisations. SSC recognises the need to build on its unique structure to make optimal use of its experts around the globe. This presentation will highlight the components of the Plants Programme and describe how SSC will help save the world's plant diversity in the new millennium.
