XVI International Botanical Congess
Physciaceae have developed a broad range of different growth forms such as crustose, placodioid, foliose and fruticose thalli. A set of 93 anatomical, morphological, and chemical characters were analysed for 43 species from 20 genera of the Physciaceae. Long, filiform condia are characteristic for the genera Amandinea, Australiaena and Hyperphyscia. Spore anatomy revealed close relationships between crustose and foliose/fruticose taxa. Crustose taxa previously belonging to the genera Buellia and Rinodina occur in all major evolutionary lines. At least three groups developed foliose/fruticose taxa which are presently treated at a generic level.
