IS BERLINA SOL (LEGUMINOSAE - CAESALPINIOIDEAE) MONOPHYLETIC?

Barbara Mackinder, Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

Breteler (1995) assigns Berlinia, a tropical African genus consisting of ca.18 species, to the tribe Macrolobieae. A recent generic level study of Macrolobieae (using trnL) places Berlinia (internally unresolved) on a distinct lineage, but with only one character difference from a polytomy node that includes some members of 12 other Macrolobieae genera (Bruneau, pers comm.). The trnL data indicate close relatives of Berlinia as Anthonotha, Gilbertiodendron, Pellegriniodendron and Librevillea. Formerly, using conventional morphological characters, authors have treated Isoberlinia as sister to Berlinia, or occasionally as congeneric. A species level study of Berlinia and Isoberlinia based on internal transcribed spacer sequences (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA is being undertaken to investigate the monophyly of Berlinia and preliminary results of this study are presented.
