XVI International Botanical Congess

A SHORT HISTORY OF BOTANY IN THE UNITED STATES, edited by Joseph Ewan, was published to be given as a gift to participants in the XI International Botanical Congress in 1969. This paper celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the publication. Using archival correspondence found in the Ewan Papers, I will track the conception, gestation and birth of this work, as well as evaluate its place in the history of botany on its thirtieth birthday. Ewan's botanical timeline is updated, and a survey is made of the contributors.
