ETHNOECOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE DEPLETION STATUS OF TRADITIONAL PLANT RESOURCES IN A KUNA COMMUNITY IN DARIEN, PANAMA

Sarah Dalle, Catherine Potvin (McGill University, Canada), Domingo Díaz, Heraclio López (Fundación Dobbo-Yala, Panamá)

This study aims to identify how ecological and ethnobotanical characteristics of forest resources may interact to explain patterns of depletion on an Indigenous territory. Focusing on a group of 25 plant species, ecological inventories in harvested and non-harvested areas of the territory were conducted to study the distribution and abundance of each species, and to estimate depletion status, the use, management and perceived depletion status were examined by means of interviews with local people. These data will be integrated in multivariate analyses (CCA, Discriminant analysis), the results of which will be used to develop management strategies with the local community.
