NORTH AMERICAN CAMPANULOIDEAE (CAMPANULACEAE)

Nancy R. Morin, Arboretum at Flagstaff, P.O. Box 670, Flagstaff, AZ, 86002, USA

North American Campanuloideae comprise 4 or 5 genera and 35 species, an interesting subset of a subfamily of more than 700 species. Unusual features for the family include: Githopsis, Heterocodon, and Triodanis are annuals, as are 7 of the Campanula species, all 4 genera have some taxa with cleistogamous flowers, 4 of the Campanula species, including a submerged aquatic, grow in wetlands. The three genera of annuals and most of the Campanula species seem to represent a radiation from a Campanula subg. Rapunculus ancestor, however, several of the species may belong in other genera. Most are limited geographically or edaphically. In southwestern North America, Nemacladus and Parishella, two xerophytic annuals placed in Cyphioideae, which is basal to Campanuloideae and Lobelioideae, otherwise known only from southern Africa. Nemacladus shows remarkable radiation in floral morphology.
