A MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY OF LILIUM IN INTERNAL TRANSCRIBED SPACER REGION OF NUCLEAR RIBOSOMAL DNA:

T. NISHIKAWA1, K. OKAZAKI2, T. UCHINO2, K. ARAKAWA3, T. NAGAMINE1 (1. NIAR, 2. Niigata Univ., 3. Yurigahara Park)

Phylogenetic relationships among 64 species of Lilium and two related species were inferred from nucleotide sequence variations in the internal transcribed spacer regions of 18S-25S nuclear ribosomal DNA. Maximum likelihood tree indicated that: (1) section Daurolirion is not independent of Sinomartagon, and it is appropriate to integrate two sections as Sinomartagon, (2) it is appropriate that L. henryi, L. brownii and L. bulbiferum are classified into subsection 6a, 6b and Sinomartagon-Daurolirion, respectively, (3) subsection 6b is much closer to Sinomartagon than subsection 6a and Archelirion, and it might arise from Sinomartagon directly, (4) Sinomartagon is a complex section so that it should be divided into true-Sinomartagon and four other taxa.
